A Quicker Way Into Weight Loss Surgery for Canadians?

by CM

Im 27 years old and looking into surgery. I have pseudo tumor cerebri. Which means false tumor of the brain. So far the only cause they know of is high weight. I am 5’4 and 265 lbs. It has many complications.

They wanted me to have brain surgery, and I refused. I’m not comfortable having anyone poke around in my brain. I was taking meds to control to flow of spinal fluid, decreasing the symptoms.

Now, I can no longer take the medications I was prescribed for this illness. They gave me kidney stones. And my neurologist refuses to see me, because he wants me to have the brain surgery.

My family doctor respects my wishes, but is only able to do so much for me. He has put my name in to see a surgeon in my area. But I was told wait times are 4-5 years. I could be BLIND by then. Not to mention many other complications that could arise.

Is there anyway that I can rush myself in? Or anything my doctor can do? Because its 4-5 years to even have your consultation with the surgeon…. then more wait time for the actual surgery.

Have you looked into self-pay?

Hi CM,

I'm very sorry to hear about your health issues, and it certainly sounds like waiting 4 to 5 years is not an option.

Have you considered paying for surgery on your own? Many clinics throughout Canada can get you in much quicker if you pay for the surgery yourself. Self-pay will also open you up to evaluating clinics throughout the United States and elsewhere.

If you are unable to pay for the surgery up front, many good financing options exist. Some surgeons will even set you up on a payment plan.

Take a look at the following two pages for more information:

- Financing Options for Bariatric Surgery
- Bariatric Surgery in Canada

I hope that helps, and please come back to let us know how things go.

Take care,

What you can do while waiting for surgery

I also am a Canadian that had a long wait, what I did was cut ALL sugar and Carbs out of my diet and learn how my new way of life would be after surgery. I got hundreds of amazing recipes for every phase and cleaned out all the "junk" in my kitchen that I wasn't allowed anymore...I then found a gym I like and joined..I started going a few times a week .... No time like the present to get ready for the rest of your life.... as for brain surgery my son had to have it due to a tumor, he was up and walking around the same evening....

Remember your GP is not a neurologist..... good luck

I also have IIH/ PTC

I would love to know if you had any luck. I want to know if I can go to another province and have it covered? I am in Manitoba and they wont do mine.
