Do autoimmune diseases disqualify me from weight loss surgery?

by Rebecca
(Dallas, Texas)

I have both Celiac’s and Sjogren’s disease. Does this disqualify me from weight loss surgery? I maintain a gluten-free diet and I take Evoxac for the Sjogren’s.

Make a Consult Appointment

by: Lap Band Groupie

I'm sure someone will be along to answer this, but I would start with consulting your own Doc/Rheumatologist. Not all autoimmune diseases are equal when it comes to WLS, and I know WLS patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and many with Thyroid Diseases. Since yours both involve the gastrointestinal system, you're right to proceed carefully. Best Wishes!

Autoimmune diseases and weight loss surgery

by: Jeff on behalf of Dr. Gregg Jossart

Hi Rebecca,

Here is Dr. Jossart's response:

"Celiac and Sjogren's would not be an absolute exclusion for surgery.

It would be surgeon-dependent and procedure-dependent."

In addition to talking with your current doctors, it may also make sense to sign up for a seminar and/or schedule a one-on-one consultation with a local qualified weight loss surgeon.

Each of these options is typically free of charge, and this will allow you to discuss your specific situation directly with the individual(s) responsible for your surgery to learn your options and risks.

Gastric band and Sjrogrens

by: Sarah

I had the band fitted long before Sjögren syndrome. Between dry mouth and Sjögren's related oesophageal problems I've had to have the band deflated and may have to have it removed. You can't keep being sick almost daily or it will tear and no ones had any fix for the eating problem

Auto Immune Disease/WLS

by: Katina

I have several AUTOIMMUNE related diseseas - Ulcerative Colitis, ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogren's, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, there's more but I will stop there. I'm 4'10 & 194.

I've always had to go the unconditional route in finding a way to stay well, as traditional meds don't agree with me. I have noticed that the less food in my stomach the better I feel. Also, the extra weight on my small frame causes me excruciating pain. I have always wanted to do a gastric sleeve, not only to lose the 80 extra pounds, but I feel like it would be a blessing not to HURT all the time from eating & taking steroids, swelling, being fatigued, & having no quality of life.

This is my last hope.

Do you think this would help me? Would I qualify?

I sure hope so. Thank you.
