Feeling of Something Twisting Inside After Gastric Bypass Surgery

by Melanie
(Minneapolis, MN)

I’m wondering if the feeling of something twisting inside is related to my gastric bypass surgery…

From time to time I feel a pain just under the bottom of my left ribs. I push on it and as I do, it actually feels like I’m able to untangle whatever is tangled or twisting in there.

I’m wondering if it’s the duodenum or the remainder of my stomach that they cut away and disconnected. No one could tell me before surgery if they take it out or leave it in. A nurse said she thought they left it in. If so, could this be what is causing this and should I see my gastric bypass surgeon about it?

Re: Gastric Bypass Patient Gets Hiccups after Eating

by: Alberto Aceves, MD, FACS

Hello Melanie,

With the information you provide here it seems to me that it might be intestine that you feeling or an internal hernia. I would recommend you go see your doctor so he can do an evaluation. This is the only way to know for sure.

When we perform a surgery we form a lifetime relationship with our patients, talk to your doctor, I am sure he will be happy to help you.

During a gastric bypass surgery the stomach is left inside the body, by the way.

see your surgeon

We could all guess what it might be but it is much easier to just go to your surgeon and find out exactly what it is. Please make an appointment and make sure. We as formerly obese people hate to be a bother. That's one of the things we really have to stop doing. We are worthy and we deserve to get an answer if something's wrong just like anyone else. Please do it sooner than later just so you have peace of mind.
