Food & Bowel Problems Advice One Month After Gastric Sleeve

by Cheryl
(Ithaca, NY)

I had a bariatric sleeve done June 24, 2015. So far I have lost 31 pounds. I am having a hard time finding things to eat. Baby food tastes nasty to me.

Any suggestions for someone one month out? Also, does anyone else have problems with bowel movements?

What to eat after Weight Loss Surgery

by: Nadia Barhoumeh-Lee

Hi Cheryl,

Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss. :)

After WLS surgery and recovery, most patients can eat "whatever" they want. Having said that, the most important food to focus on after surgery is PROTEIN! There really is no need for you to eat baby food, normal food is good. :)

Meat, fish, chicken, cheese, yogurt, eggs, some beans and soy protein if you can tolerate that.

Of course, you want to get veggies and some fruit in as well. Easy on the carbs, eat your protein food first, and avoid eating and drinking at the same time - wait about 30 minutes to drink fluids.

The surgery works well but as you probably already know, it's only a tool that helps you to lose and MANAGE your weight long term. Therefore, it is vitally important to develop good eating and self-care habits now.

No one can do this alone - it's hard.

Getting help from your doctor, dietician, etc. are great. In addition, support from your peers who have had WLS is necessary if you aren't doing that already. They can give you excellent suggestions.

Feel free to join my free online support group - this will help and you will likely enjoy it. :)

Its easy to sign up and the research supports the importance of attending support groups.
