Taking Appetite Suppressants Before Bariatric Surgery

Can I take a prescription or over the counter appetite suppressant before bariatric surgery?

I’m scheduled to have gastric sleeve surgery in 10 days and want to make sure that it’s safe to take them (I currently have a prescription for phentermine but would like to know your thoughts about appetite suppressants in general before weight loss surgery).

Is this a good way to try to get your weight down prior to surgery in order to reduce the risk of complications?

Thanks for your help,

Hi Gina,

In short.....NO.....don't take them....No need...

Usually, we recommend a 2-week pre-op diet of liquid protein....

This is done to try to decrease the size of the liver in order to make the surgery technically easier for the surgeon...

However, definitely check with you surgeon and see what he likes to do preop.....

Good Luck,

Gina this is something that you really should discuss with your doctor. It's important for he or she to know. You could end up taking something that could cause problems during surgery and the doctor needs to be aware of anything you are taking. Hope that helps!
