Weight Regain After Lap Band Surgery

by Tiffany
(Anniston, AL)

I had my band surgery in 2008. I weighed 344 when I had my surgery. I got down to 150, then all if a sudden I started gaining weight back.

I have had 3 adjustments in the past 6 months with no help. I am now up to about 225 🙁

My doctor doesn’t seem to be concerned, but I am. I don’t feel any restriction. My doctor checked for leakage last time I went in but there was none.

Any suggestions?

Hi Tiffany,

Sure sounds like you have done extremely well after lap band surgery....

To lose 200 pounds is almost unheard of...but congratulations.

It is not uncommon to regain 10-20% of weight lost and this would put you in the 170-190 range.

You have regained quite a bit, but if you are able to level off now, you are still down 125 pounds ....still much healthier than your starting weight.

The most common reason patients regain weight, is they graze on small amounts of high sugar foods, or carbohydrates.....eating this way allows one to essentially "cheat the band". These types of food just melt and move through the band without much sense of restriction.

Certainly, a new meeting with a Bariatric Dietician would be beneficial to get you back on track.

Finally, remember, solid protein foods are the best for you, and for feeling some fullness or restriction.

Good Luck,
